The state of Michigan has a ban-the-box law that applies to criminal background checks for public sector employees. Public employers in Michigan may only inquire into criminal history after an initial interview or conditional offer of employment has been extended. In addition, some municipalities and counties have adopted ban-the-box laws: Ann Arbor, Detroit, East Lansing, Genesee County, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Muskegon County, Oakland County and Ypsilanti.
