Louisiana has enacted a new law that states a landlord is not allowed to require an application fee unless the landlord has given a written notice including the following:
The application fee.- Whether or not the landlord considers credit scores, employment history, criminal history, or eviction records.
- The applicant is allowed to submit a statement to the landlord explaining, in 200 words or less, that the applicant experienced financial hardship due to state or federally declared disasters or emergencies. The applicant also needs to detail how the hardship impacted the applicant’s credit, employment, and/or rental history.
- The applicant’s statement of financial hardship is required to reference the COVID-19 pandemic and hurricanes.
