Chrome’s New Password Checkup Feature

We recently received a phone call regarding Chrome’s new password checkup feature. There’s a lot of technology and detail involved in Chrome’s new security feature so we’ll provide a few links at the bottom of this brief article. For now, we simply want to make you aware of the new feature in case you’re using Chrome and in case you receive a data breach message, whether on NCS’ site or another site.

Here’s an image of a message many Chrome users are now receiving:

At first glance, the user might think Bank of America (or whatever site the user was visiting when the message appeared) had the data breach; however, Chrome’s new feature is simply saying that the user name/password combination that’s being used on the current site matches the credentials used on another site that had a data breach. Unfortunately, Chrome doesn’t provide the website that had the data breach.

If you receive a message like the one above, you should consider updating your passwords on all websites that use these credentials.

Chrome’s new feature is an outstanding feature, but can be a little alarming the first time you receive it. Just make sure your passwords are changed periodically.
